âI canât believe you convinced me to go bushwalking with you,â Bradford said as he stepped over a cow pat in the field below Eliasâs house.
Charmaine threw her head back and laughed. âYou must know this area like the back of your hand. You grew up here.â
He smirked. âI know it too well. I wanted to take you somewhere luxurious and spoil you. Instead, Iâm sweating through my shirt and jeans, and sliding around in cow poop in my Italian loafers.â
âI told you to dress comfortably.â
âIâm not sure I like this whole idea of us taking turns on deciding what to do on a date.â He reached for her hand and held it gently as they walked. Their joined hands swung in time with their footsteps.
âYou took me to a fancy restaurant for our first date, and now Iâm taking you on one of my favourite walks for our second. Itâs going well, by the way.â
She couldnât believe how confident she felt. Ever since theyâd had dinner at the Surf and Sea restaurant the previous Friday night, sheâd been a different person. Conversation with him came so easily that her anxiety simply vanished. He was fun, lighthearted and warm. Sheâd been so intimidated by his handsome, athletic looks at first, but now she was completely at ease in his presence. Banter didnât exactly come naturally to her, but sheâd found herself exchanging witty small talk with him and she wasnât awkward about it.
âIâm glad itâs going well,â he said. âBy the way, where are we going?â
âThe cliffs over here are amazing. They have a spectacular view over the open ocean, and the cliff faces themselves are so black and jagged. I love to sit at the top and mull.â
âThat sounds dangerous.â
âI donât sit too close to the edgeâunless Iâm feeling adventurous, of course.â
He shook his head. âI had no idea you were such a daredevil.â
âThereâs more to me than meets the eye.â
He winked at her. âClearly. Okay, the cliffs. Then we head into town and I buy you a nice coffee at Beaâs.â
âThat sounds perfect,â she said.
âHow are things at work?â
âPretty good. I sold my first painting today.â
âReally? Thatâs fantastic. Youâre a professional artist now. Thereâs no turning back.â
She blushed at his words. âI donât know about that, but itâs definitely a boost. Betsy has hardly been at work lately, so Iâm basically doing everything the way I want. Sheâs so distracted by this whole thing with Buck and taking care of Samantha. Her focus is on her family, and I can respect that. Itâs why she hired me â to give her some flexibility in her schedule. And this way, I can try out new ideas, something sheâs encouraged me to do.â
âWhat kind of ideas?â
âIâve moved the ordering system online. Betsy wrote orders into her ledger by hand, and she also counted stock and planned trips to the flower market that way. Iâve put all of it into a web-based system we can access from our mobile phones. Now
